One Day DIY: Privacy Film

Adding film to your windows offers you added privacy without compromising natural light. There are different types films - peel and stick and cling are the most popular ones I've seen. It is a great renter friendly solution you can install for added comfort in areas facing the outdoors or on windows facing your neighbors.

I installed this film on my front door because I wanted to maintain the natural daylight without neighbors being able to see my business. I used the static cling version, which is activated with water and it has held up great almost two years in.

Clear your Door/Window

If your door or window has a removable grille, unscrew it to make the installation process easier.

Clean the surface

You do not want dirt getting stuck between your film and glass. Using a microfiber cloth and isopropyl alcohol, wipe down your glass surface and let it fully dry before proceeding.

Prepare Your Film

Separate the vinyl film from the paper backing.

Saturate Your Surface

Water will activate the static cling, using a spray bottle, wet your surface throughly.

At this point you can start pressing your vinyl against the surface and using your squeegee (comes with the film I recommend) press out any air bubbles or water bubbles caught behind your film.

Occasionally, you may need to peel up the vinyl to wet it again and go over it with your squeegee again.

Be patient and move slowly because you want to get the most seamless, bubble free look.

Trim the Edges

To avoid the film from holding over and having air creep in, use a sharp blade to cut off the excess film from around the glass.
