Simple Ways I’m Protecting My Mental Health During Winter

I remember talking to my therapist about how trapped I felt during winter season. The cold was triggering for me. It was hard to explain to people that the cold wasn’t just inconvenient.

It brought on memories of being a teen with not enough blankets, cold hard floors, windows that didn’t close properly, and rumbling tummy.

She said “well you’re good with checklists” and “we can’t change your environment but how can we use your DIY skills to make your environment feel safer”.

It clicked for me that I had more power than I realized. She helped disrupt this loop of “I’m cold, I hate it here, i’m miserable” and helped me arrive at “It’s cold and I can help myself get through it.” That winter, I bought an outdoor heater, insulated around my windows and coincidentally was gifted a Carhartt coat and beanie. It’s like the universe was working to remind me that this winter could be different.

So incase you needed someone to disrupt your loop, here it is. I hope whatever discomfort winter brings you, that you know you’re not alone and that you have a little more power than you might think.

Date Nights Outdoors

I bought a handful of long sleeve thermals to layer up and filled a thermos with mexican hot chocolate. It felt nice actually enjoying being outdoors. It helps to have a handsome date.

Board Games for Gatherings

Will’s cousin brings board games to every family function. It generates the perfect energy for an extrovert like me.

My current favorite is Catchphrase, and I know this isn’t technically a board game but it ALWAYS gets the family going.

Attend Community Events

Being in community is the best way to see how much good exists in the world. Last week, a new friend invited me to participate in a workshop for women in business. I expected it to all be business but oh my goodness - I walked away inspired and motivated to continue showing up for myself and community.

I almost said “no” but I am so glad I said yes to stepping outside of my comfort zone during uncomfortable weather.

Indulging in Comfort Food

Tamales are a holiday staple in hispanic households and I still have no idea how to make them so in the meantime, I’ve been buying them from a Guatemalan bakery. At home, I’ve been making plenty of pots of arroz con leche, mexican hot chocolate and next on my list is ponche and pupusas.

Every Saturday morning, we stop by a Mexican bakery to pick up conchas and it’s become my new favorite family ritual. If you’re ever in Louisville, you HAVE to try La Pana’s fresh conchas.

Taking My Vitamins

A few years ago, I learned that women of color are at a higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency. I started taking Vitamin D on a daily basis and I have been mindful to stay consistent through the winter because Vitamin D deficiencies can contribute to mood changes and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
